Wash Micro Ring Hair Extensions?
(and other micro ring extension questions)
"How do you wash micro ring hair extensions?"
We get a lot of questions specifically about how to wash micro ring hair extensions (also called micro loop hair extensions or micro bead hair extensions or micro link hair extensions - and used interchangeably in this guide).
We also get asked about when you can start washing your micro loop hair extensions, and the short answer is not for the first 48 - 72 hours of having them fitted.
Hair is heavier when wet, so if you have micro link hair extensions that are much longer than your own natural hair (or even if you haven't) you might find the washing process more manageable if you separate your hair into two sections down the middle of your head and have two loose ponytails. This way you'll be able to focus your attention on one side of your head before moving to the other side.
We've outlined two methods to washing your micro ring extensions - they are similar and each is as effective as the other; both methods involve combing your micro loop hair extensions and both methods can be used with straight texture micro link hair extensions as well as wavy textured micro link hair extensions and curly texture micro link hair extensions.
Method One: How to Wash Micro Ring Hair Extensions: Shampoo Before Water Washing
Step
1
Detangle
while the hair is dry using your fingers. Always start at the ends of the hair
and work your way towards the micro rings. Don’t
pull or tug at any knots as you don’t want to dislodge the micro rings.
Step
2
While
the hair is still dry, use a wide tooth comb and start combing at the ends of
the hair, working towards the micro rings. Gently
tease out any knots or tangling without tugging or pulling at the hair.
Step 3
Pour some shampoo onto your scalp (and any area that doesn't have micro ring extensions fitted) and massage as you normally would but slowly and with less force.
Step 4
Smooth
the shampoo that’s already on your scalp (and on the top of your head) down the
length of your natural hair and then down through the micro link hair extensions.
You can use a shower comb to distribute the shampoo or simply use your fingers.
Avoid rubbing the hair in a circular motion as this causes tangling.
Step 5
Rinse the hair by pouring lukewarm water over the hair (using the shower or bottle). Take hold of all of the hair (or one section of hair if you have sectioned it) and gently squeeze starting at the top (near the micro rings) and working your way down to the ends.
Step 6
If you have a shower, keep the water running and keep opening and closing your hand (squeezing) your hair at the same time as the water is running, but do not rub the hair.
Repeat steps 3, 4 6 and 7 if you think the hair is not clean.
Method Two: How to Wash Micro Ring Hair Extensions:
Wet Washing
Step1
Mix your shampoo with some warm water in an empty water bottle or a jug (500ml of water should have no more than two table spoons of shampoo - too much shampoo will act as a lubricant and cause the micro rings to slip down your hair and come off).
Step 2
Pour some (not all) of this mixture over the top of your head so that you can wash your scalp.
Step 3
When you've cleansed your scalp, and then pour some of the remaining shampoo mix over the micro ring hair extensions but not directly on the rings)
Step 4
You can use a shower comb to distribute the shampoo or simply use your fingers. Avoid rubbing the hair in a circular motion as this causes tangling.
Step 5
Rinse the hair by pouring lukewarm water over the hair (using the shower or bottle). Take hold of all of the hair (or one section if you have sectioned the hair) and gently squeeze starting at the top (near the micro rings) and working your way down to the ends.
Step 6
If you're using a bottle or jug, refill it and pour the water over your hair and whilst doing so, keep opening and closing your hand (squeezing) your hair at the same time as the water is running, but do not rub the hair.
Repeat steps 3, 4 6 and 7 if you think the hair is not clean.
Always wash your micro link hair extensions after swimming.
Drying Micro Ring Hair Extensions

Towel Drying Micro Ring Hair Extensions
Pat your scalp to dry it and squeeze the hair extensions with the towel. Avoid rubbing the hair as this causes tangling. It might be helpful to use a smaller towel to dry the hair that's closes to the actual micro rings.
Blow Drying Micro Ring Hair Extensions
Use a low heat setting for blow drying your hair - excessive heat damages human hair and can heat up the actual micro rings. Micro rings are usually made of metal (even the ones with silicone inserts) and metal is a heat conductor; the micro rings will get hot if you use a high heat setting on them or near them.
In general, using blow dryers or any heat styling tools on your micro ring hair extensions should be kept to a minimum.
Whichever drying method you choose, it's important that the area around the micro rings is not left wet so the main point is that after you wash micro ring hair extensions, make sure they are completely dried.
