How Do I Take Care Of Hair Extensions?
(human hair and synthetic hair extensions)

"How should I take care of hair extensions?"

If you take care of hair extensions, then they'll take care of you.... well OK, they won't exactly take care of you, but they'll certainly take care of how you look.

Whether you have human hair extensions or synthetic hair extensions, there are some basic hair extension care steps that will preserve the look and feel of your extended hair.

Take Care of Hair Extensions - Daily Styling Tool Tips for Human and Synthetic Hair

Keep combing and brushing to a minimum. Any combing or brushing should always start at the tips before moving upwards and if possible; keep to twice a day, three times at most.

Ideally soft bristles without the balls at the end of the bristles so that they don't catch on any bonds, loops, rings or tracks (attachment points for your hair extensions).

Avoid using hair extension styling products directly on or near any bonded attachments like keratin, glue or micro beads. If these bonds become sticky and deteriorate the hair extensions may come loose or the bonds may cause your growth hair to become matted with the softened bonds.

Daily Styling Tips to Take Care of Hair Extensions (Synthetic Hair)

Combs and Brushes
Large tooth combs = straight and lightly wavy hair textures.
Wide tooth combs = curly and very wavy hair textures.
Brushes = straight and lightly wavy hair

Controlling Frizz
Use a wig spray or if your synthetic hair extensions can be removed, soak them in water mixed with fabric conditioner for about 30 minutes.

Heat Styling
If your synthetic hair extensions are also heat resistant then it's best
to only use low heat settings (including blow dryers) and only heat style infrequently. Heat styling too frequently or with too high temperatures can irreparably damage the fibres, distort the texture and shorten the lifespan of the hair extensions.

Hair Extension Products
Most hairstyling products can be used on synthetic hair and they should be applied from the mid length downwards. Avoid using styling products directly on or near any bonded attachments like keratin, glue or micro beads.

Controlling Frizz
Smooth frizz by using anti-frizz serums, or applying hair oils to damp hair. Alternatively when the hair is dry, pour two or three drops of hair oil on your fingers and smooth the hair.

Heat Styling
When it comes to heat styling tools, frequent use over a long period of time will ultimately damage the hair. If you must, must, must heat style, try using thermal protectants and serums to mitigate some of the impact of heat.

Hair Extension Products
Any kind of styling products can be used including
oils, sprays, waxes and mousses. Apply hair extension products from the tips, upwards; only go as far as the mid length if the hair extensions were attached using bonding methods like keratin, glue or micro beads.

Keeping human hair hydrated is essential to maintain elasticity and prevent it from becoming brittle. A water-based moisturizer in a pump-spray bottle can be used daily (a light misting).

Take Care of Hair Extensions at Night

If you tend to move a lot in your sleep then wearing a silk scarf or tying the hair into a loose ponytail will help maintain the hair extensions.

Phew!

Taking these basic steps of hair extension care will mean your extended tresses will look good and last.
