The Guide to Synthetic Lace Wigs
The world of lace wigs can be confusing, synthetic lace wigs, synthetic lace front wigs, lace frontals, lace wigs and lace front wigs are all types of wigs, but how do you know the difference between them and how do you make the best choice for you? Well here at TCPG we’ve created a guide to help make things clear. These types of wigs are basically wigs made using French or Swiss lace for the wig cap but instead of using human hair, synthetic fibres including nylon and the popular Kanekalon and Toyokalon fibres are used. A synthetic hair lace wig can be either a full lace wig where the entire cap is made of lace, a lace front wig where the front and sides are made of lace but the rest of the cap is wefts or other material.
Synthetic Lace Wigs… Heat Resistance and ColoursUnlike human hair laces wigs, not all synthetic hair lace wigs are made equal. Some will be heat resistant to around 180 degrees Celsius (that’s 356 in Fahrenheit). A TCPG top tip is that even if a synthetic wig is heat resistant, it’s always wise to use the lowest heat setting on your dryer, flat iron or curling tongs as this will prevent your wig from “wearing out” more quickly. Always read the details carefully to find out whether the synthetic hair lace wig you’re buying is heat resistant as heat damage to synthetic hair is irreparable. You’ll be pleased to know that synthetic hair wigs follow the same colour schemes as human hair lace wigs, with colours from 1 (jet black) to 613 (platinum blonde) and everything you can think of in between. The plus side with synthetic lace wigs is that colours which tend to be more difficult to create with human hair such as greens, blues and coppers are widely available with synthetic hair.
Synthetic Lace Wigs… Cost and DurabilityOne of the biggest differences between a lace wig made with synthetic hair and a human hair lace wig is the cost. Due to the fibres being synthetically made the cost to manufacture is cheaper than the cost of buying, treating and colouring human hair. Depending on where you shop, a good quality lace wig made from synthetic hair is likely to start at the £100 mark. Just how long will your synthetic hair lace wig last? That depends on how often the wig is worn along with how it’s treated. If you follow the basic guidelines of not using heat styling tools and always detangling from tip to root as seen in our synthetic wig care guide then you can expect your wig to last a few months. Obviously if the wig is used less often it will last longer.
Synthetic Lace Wigs… Benefits and DisadvantagesLace wigs made with synthetic hair will keep their style after being washed. Another benefit is that lace wigs made with synthetic hair will be more affordable than human hair lace wigs and if you’re new to the world of lace wigs, a synthetic lace wig is a good place to start. Synthetic wigs are also lighter than human hair lace wigs and will dry more quickly quicker after washing. Caring for a synthetic wig is relatively simple in comparison to caring for a human hair wig. It’s worth investing in a good quality Silicon to help prevent frizzing. The disadvantage of a lace wig made with synthetic hair is that even if heat resistant, excessive heat will damage the hair. If what you’re after is a wig that you can teat like real (human) hair then the best thing to do is buy a human hair wig. So there you have it, now you’re in the know about lace wigs made with synthetic hair.
